Drifting Down Thailand's Firefly River

On the Mae Klong River in Thailand, about 80 kilometers from Bangkok, synchronous fireflies light up the Lamphu trees along the banks most of the year. Evening boats drift out from the Amphawa floating market area between 6 and 9 PM, cut their engines, and let the trees do the show. Whole rows of trees blink in unison, a wave of light rolling down the river in the dark. There is no lottery to enter and no season to chase. It is the easiest firefly display in Asia to see.

Why this one matters

Not the most overwhelming display, but the most effortless. Boats run every night, all year. If you are in Bangkok, there is no reason not to go.
