★★ Worth the Detour

Neuschwanstein Castle

In the Bavarian Alps near Füssen, about two hours southwest of Munich, Neuschwanstein rises from a crag in white towers and pointed roofs. Begun in 1869 for King Ludwig II of Bavaria, it was never a real fortress but one king's private stage set for Wagner's operas and Germanic legend, and its silhouette became the world's template for the fairy tale castle, Disney's included. In July 2025 it joined the UNESCO World Heritage list. Cross Marienbrücke, the bridge above the gorge, for the classic view of the castle. Every September a week long concert series fills the Singers' Hall. The interior is seen only on a guided tour, and timed slots sell out weeks ahead in season, so book once your dates are set.

Why this one matters

The fairy tale castle Disney borrowed for Disneyland, on its hill with a mountain backdrop and a blue green lake in front. A fairy tale brought to life.

Hannah's take

From far away it looks exactly like the castle from a fairy tale, dreamy against the mountains. Inside, you can only go on a timed guided tour, and no photography is allowed in the rooms, but the rooms are worth it, with fittings astonishingly advanced for their time. You can see a bridge on the mountain, crowded with people, and that is where the signature photograph is taken. The whole castle in a single frame. Below the castle, lies Alpsee, clear water with wild swans and the Alps rising behind it, and in summer a paddle boat out on the lake, looking back at the castle on its hill, is the loveliest view of all.
