Tongariro Alpine Crossing
In the volcanic heart of New Zealand's North Island, about four hours south of Auckland, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing runs 12 miles across an active volcanic plateau. The route climbs past old lava flows to Red Crater, then drops past the Emerald Lakes, small crater lakes colored bright green by minerals, with Mount Ngauruhoe, the volcano that played Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings, rising beside the trail, and takes most walkers six to eight hours. Walk it between November and April, when the high track is free of snow. Strong alpine winds can close the track at short notice.

It earns its reputation as the world's greatest day hike. The ground underfoot changes from lava field to crater lake to alpine valley in a single walk, and it is all done in one day. For Lord of the Rings fans, Mount Doom alone is worth the walk.
The crossing is one way. We arranged a shuttle in the morning to take us to the start, planning to walk back to where we left the car. Strong wind closed the track that day, so we never got to walk it. Check the condition before you go, and keep a spare day if you can.
