Meeting Ring Tailed Lemurs in Madagascar
Berenty Reserve lies in southern Madagascar, reached by a domestic flight from Antananarivo followed by a drive. Troops of ring tailed lemurs move through the spiny forest at dawn, sunbathing in the first light with their striped tails curled overhead before foraging. Their dawn sunbathing ritual, bellies to the sun in a neat row, is one of the most photographed moments in Madagascar. The dry season, roughly April through November, offers the easiest travel and the most active lemurs. (Image: AI generated illustration.)

Lemurs exist only on Madagascar, and the ring tail is its most iconic ambassador. Berenty's habituated troops let you watch complex social behavior at close range, while the indri's song at Andasibe is the wildest sound in the primate world.
