Encounter Gray Whales in Baja California
Worth a detour
Off the west coast of Dominica, some two hundred sperm whales live year round in the deep water close to shore. On regulated swims, snorkelers slip into startlingly blue water as the great whales hang motionless below, their slow clicks carrying through the water. A tail fluke rising before a deep dive is the farewell image of the encounter. The whales are resident in every month, with the calmest seas from November through March.

The largest toothed predator on earth, met in the water on its own terms. Dominica holds one of the only resident sperm whale populations in the world.
