White, Pink, Black: Three of the World's Most Colorful Beaches

Most of the world's beaches are some shade of gold. These three are not. Together they form a spectrum, white to pink to black, and each color comes from a completely different force of nature. Whitehaven Beach, Australia

Start at the gentle end of the spectrum. Whitehaven's seven kilometers of sand are almost pure silica, so white it looks edited, cool under bare feet even at midday, squeaking softly as you walk. At the northern end, the tide pulls the sand into marble patterns at Hill Inlet, best seen from the Tongue Point lookout. Reachable only by boat or air, it is the calmest of the three and the easiest to love.

Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Indonesia

Now the middle of the spectrum, and the shyest. Fewer than ten true pink sand beaches exist on Earth. Here, fragments of red coral blush the white sand pink, softest at the waterline in morning light. It is subtler than the photos promise, a secret instead of a spectacle, sitting exactly between Whitehaven's purity and what comes next. Reynisfjara, Iceland

And then the other pole. Where Whitehaven was shaped gently over millions of years, Reynisfjara was made violently: jet black basalt sand, cliffs of lava frozen into hexagonal pillars, sea stacks rising from the surf. Compared with the black sand beaches of Hawaii, Iceland's surf is wilder and the whole place feels rawer. It is the wild end of the spectrum, beautiful the way storms are beautiful.
