Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Reynisfjara sits on Iceland's south coast near Vik, about two and a half hours by car from Reykjavik. The sand is jet black volcanic basalt. The Gardar cliffs are lava frozen into hexagonal pillars, with the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore and a sea cave at the base of the cliff. This is one of the most photogenic beaches on Earth: black sand, white surf, and geometric basalt make every shot look epic. This is a look only beach: swimming is never safe. Sneaker waves have swept visitors away, so stay at least 30 meters from the waterline and never turn your back on the ocean. Summer brings puffins and endless daylight; winter can bring northern lights. Note: storms in early 2026 damaged parts of the shoreline, so verify current access before visiting.
