Kenai Fjords National Park

About two hours south of Anchorage, Kenai Fjords National Park unfolds from the little port town of Seward, a pretty waterfront base famous for halibut fishing. Exit Glacier is the park's front door, a short trail from the parking lot to blue ice, with markers showing how far it has retreated in recent decades. Beyond it, the Harding Icefield feeds nearly 40 glaciers down to the sea, and day boats from Seward harbor run the fjords past sea lions, puffins, and orcas. May through September is the season, peaking June to August.

Why this one matters

Kenai Fjords is the easiest glacier country in Alaska to reach on your own. Exit Glacier needs no cruise ship or bush plane, just a short trail from a parking lot, which makes it the rare glacier you can stand next to without a big expedition. And the gateway is Seward itself, a working waterfront town, so the trip pairs ice with halibut fishing and a real town to come back to.
