Banff National Park
Worth a detour
About five hours northwest of Calgary via the Icefields Parkway, Jasper National Park is the largest and wildest of the Canadian Rockies parks. The Columbia Icefield feeds the Athabasca Glacier, where giant snow coaches drive straight onto the ice. Nearby, Maligne Lake holds Spirit Island, one of the most photographed views in Canada. Late June through September is the season, when the glacier tours run and the lake is fully open.

Jasper is the natural second half of a Banff trip. Maligne Lake's Spirit Island is the famous lake view. And the Athabasca Glacier lets you drive straight onto living ice, no mountaineering required.
