Gates of the Arctic National Park

About 200 miles north of Fairbanks, Gates of the Arctic National Park spreads across 8.4 million acres of the Brooks Range above the Arctic Circle, with no roads, no trails, and no visitor facilities. What it has is the jagged Arrigetch Peaks, six wild rivers, and caribou migrating through untouched tundra. Most visitors see it on a flightseeing tour from Bettles or Coldfoot, or from the Dalton Highway which runs along its eastern edge without ever entering the park. June through August is the season, under the midnight sun.

Why this one matters

This is one of the largest intact wilderness areas on Earth, and its emptiness is the point. No roads, no trails, no signs, just the Brooks Range as it has been for thousands of years. For most visitors the experience is simply seeing it, from a small plane or the Dalton Highway, and knowing that places like this still exist.
