Katmai National Park

About 300 miles southwest of Anchorage, Katmai National Park is reached by a short flight to King Salmon, then a boat or floatplane ride to Brooks Camp. Its famous Brooks Falls is where brown bears stand in rushing water to catch sockeye salmon leaping upstream, watched from viewing platforms just steps away. Some 2,200 bears roam the park, one of the densest concentrations anywhere, and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes holds the ash field of the 1912 Novarupta eruption. June through September is the season, with the best bear viewing from July into early September.

Why this one matters

Brooks Falls is the most iconic bear viewing scene on the planet. Nowhere else can you watch brown bears catch leaping salmon from a platform steps away, with dozens of bears fishing the same stretch of river at the peak of the run. The platforms and rangers make it the most reliable bear encounter in Alaska, spectacular and safe at once.
