Encounter Gray Whales in Baja California
Worth a detour
The Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya, reached through Kilimanjaro or Nairobi airports, stage the largest land migration on Earth. More than a million wildebeest move in vast columns with zebra and gazelle, trailed by lions and hyenas. During calving season the southern Ndutu plains fill with newborn calves by the hundred thousand. Calving peaks January through March, and the great herds mass along the Mara River from July through October. The herds themselves are reliably present in season, but a river crossing is luck and never promised.

No other wildlife event matches its scale. Watching a million animals move as one body, predators trailing, is the defining safari spectacle on Earth.
