Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park is in northern Arizona, about four and a half hours from Las Vegas, and day trips from the Strip are among the most popular ways to see it. The Colorado River carved a 277 mile long canyon here, up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep, its walls banded in red, orange, and gold. You can ride a mule down into the canyon on a guided trip, or hike it rim to rim, crossing the Colorado River on a footbridge at Phantom Ranch. Best season is spring and fall: March through May and September through November bring mild temperatures and clear views.

Why this one matters

No other view on earth shows this much time at once. The canyon walls expose nearly two billion years of geological history, band after band, each layer a different era. You are not just looking at scenery, you are looking at the planet's memory. And it is monumental in scale, a mile deep and stretching beyond what the eye can take in.
