Hot Springs National Park

In central Arkansas, about an hour from Little Rock, Hot Springs National Park wraps around a small city in the Ouachita Mountains. The park protects 47 natural thermal springs, set aside in 1832 as the first land the American government ever reserved, forty years before Yellowstone, the first national park. Bathhouse Row lines the base of Hot Springs Mountain with eight grand bathhouses, and forested trails wind through the hills above town. Fall brings foliage and the town's favorite bathing season.

Why this one matters

It is the first land America ever set aside for the public, free for everyone by law since 1832. A visit is a small lesson in American history and a working bathhouse at the same time. You learn where the national parks began, take the waters the way people did a century ago, and do it all under fall color in the Ouachita Mountains.
