Stand Under a River of Hawks in Veracruz
Worth making time for
About an hour from Kuala Lumpur, the Selangor River at Kampung Kuantan is one of Malaysia's largest and longest running firefly watching sites. Thousands of male fireflies gather on the berembang trees along the brackish riverbanks and flash in perfect synchrony, so whole trees pulse with light. You watch from a silent oar poled sampan in near total darkness. The fireflies show year round; go on a clear, moonless night and skip heavy rain evenings.

This is the original home of the synchronous firefly, the mangrove rivers where scientists first documented the unison flashing over a century ago. Seeing it from a silent sampan, with no engine and no lights, is the purest way the phenomenon can be watched.
