Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Half an hour from Cleveland, Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley protects the forested valley of the river that caught fire in 1969, a blaze that helped spark the Clean Water Act and the river's remarkable recovery. Today the valley holds waterfalls, wetlands, and deep forest between Cleveland and Akron. Brandywine Falls drops 65 feet through a sandstone gorge, the park's signature sight. Spring brings the strongest waterfalls, and fall brings the valley's best color.

Why this one matters

This is America's great environmental comeback story. A river so polluted it burned now runs clean through a national park, proof that damaged places can heal.
