Laguna de los Tres

Laguna de los Tres is the glacial lake at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy in Los Glaciares National Park, in Argentine Patagonia. Walkers set out from El Chaltén, about three hours from El Calafate, and the trail runs about 13 miles round trip, climbing about 2,600 feet through lenga forest and past Laguna Capri, ending with a steep scramble over glacial moraine to a turquoise lake below Fitz Roy's granite spires. The whole walk takes most hikers eight to nine hours. Strong wind often sweeps the exposed final climb.

Why this one matters

It is as close as most walkers will ever get to Fitz Roy, standing beneath granite spires that rise sheer above a turquoise lake. The beauty is almost unreal, a jagged skyline that looks drawn rather than real. Fittingly, it is the mountain in the Patagonia brand logo.
