Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)

Preikestolen, known in English as Pulpit Rock, is a flat topped granite cliff above Lysefjord in southwest Norway, about an hour from Stavanger. The trail runs about 5 miles round trip, climbing about 1,600 feet over stone steps and rocky ground to a plateau about 80 feet square, with no railing at the edge. The whole walk takes most hikers about four hours. From November to April, special equipment and a guide are needed on this trail.

Why this one matters

It is Norway's most famous viewpoint for a reason. Standing on a flat rock with nothing between you and a 2,000 foot drop to the fjord is a thrill no photograph quite captures. It is also a highlight of a Lysefjord cruise, where the same cliff looks just as astounding from the water below.
