Stand Under a River of Hawks in Veracruz

On Mexico's Gulf coast about four hours east of Mexico City, the coastal plain north of Veracruz city squeezes the largest raptor migration on Earth into a single corridor. Four to seven million hawks, vultures, falcons, and eagles pass through each fall, counted since 1991 from the stations at Cardel and Chichicaxtle. Single days have topped 700,000 birds. Early to mid October is the season, when the species waves overlap and the flight runs strongest between 1 and 3 PM.
