Kobuk Valley National Park
In northwestern Alaska above the Arctic Circle, Kobuk Valley National Park is reached by air taxi from Kotzebue, itself a flight from Anchorage. Its centerpiece is the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, rising up to 100 feet, the largest active dune field above the Arctic Circle, sitting improbably in the middle of the tundra. Twice a year the Western Arctic caribou herd migrates across the dunes, leaving hoofprints in the sand, and nearby Onion Portage holds 12,500 years of caribou hunting history. June through August is the season, under the midnight sun.

The Great Kobuk Sand Dunes are unlike anything else in the Alaska park system. Nowhere else do 100 foot dunes rise out of Arctic tundra, and twice a year the caribou migration walks straight across them, hoofprints in the sand. For travelers already flying the Alaska bush, it is a small, strange, unforgettable detour.
