Virgin Islands National Park

A twenty minute ferry ride from St. Thomas, the island of St. John holds one of the Caribbean's last undeveloped shores. Nearly three fifths of the island is national park, a sweep of tropical dry forest falling to white sand beaches and coral reefs. Trunk Bay's marked underwater trail leads snorkelers over coral a few yards from the sand, and green turtles graze the shallows at Maho Bay. December through April brings the driest weather and the calmest seas.

Why this one matters

What sets it apart is how unbuilt it feels. There are no big hotel chains, just villas and small inns, and the beaches stay strikingly empty next to crowded Puerto Rico or St. Thomas. You can slip into the water almost anywhere around the island and find reef within a short swim, under green ridges, in a blue that hardly looks real.
