Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Worth making time for
In northern Minnesota on the Canadian border, about five hours north of Minneapolis, Voyageurs is the national park with no roads. It is a watery wilderness roughly the size of New York City: 30 lakes and more than 500 islands, where boats are the only way in. Rent a houseboat and live aboard for days, mooring at your own island each night under some of the darkest skies in the country. Summer is houseboat season; fall and winter bring the northern lights.

Total solitude, by design. A park you can only enter by water, where the lakes, the islands, and the starry sky are all yours.
