Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park spans Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, the world's first national park, established in 1872. It sits on an active supervolcano: over 500 geysers, about half the world's total, plus steaming hot springs and rainbow colored pools like the Grand Prismatic Spring, and large free roaming bison herds you can reliably spot in Lamar and Hayden valleys. Best season is summer: most roads only open from mid April to early November, with July and August bringing peak crowds.

Old Faithful is one of the world's most reliable geysers, erupting roughly every 90 minutes. The hot springs and pools come in gorgeous colors, led by the Grand Prismatic Spring. Big herds of bison roam free here, the largest wild herd in the country. Mammoth Hot Springs is the odd one out: white travertine terraces stacked like frozen waterfalls, with dead trees standing on the mineral crust.
