Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park is in southern Oregon, about two and a half hours from Eugene. It holds the deepest lake in the United States, a 1,949 foot deep caldera filled only by rain and snow, its water so pure it glows an intense blue. A cinder cone called Wizard Island rises from the surface. Best season is summer: July through September brings open roads and snow free trails.

Why this one matters

The blue is unreal. No rivers feed the lake, only rain and snow, so the water is among the purest on earth and nearly 2,000 feet deep. It is the deepest lake in the country, and from the rim you see all of it at once.
