Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles National Park is in central California, about two hours south of San Jose. Its jagged volcanic spires rise from chaparral hills, and trails wind through talus caves formed by boulders wedged into narrow canyons. It is one of the best places to see the California condor, the giant endangered bird, soaring overhead. Best season is spring: March through May brings wildflowers and comfortable hiking weather. Bear Gulch Cave closes from mid May through mid July while Townsend's big eared bats raise their young, so check before you go.
