Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park is about 70 miles west of Key West, reachable only by boat or seaplane. Its centerpiece is Fort Jefferson, a massive 19th century brick fortress, the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas, built to guard the shipping lane into the Gulf of Mexico. The day trip ferry includes snorkel gear, so the visit is as much about swimming over coral reefs and past sea turtles as touring the fort. Best season is the dry season: November through April brings calmer seas for the two and a half hour ferry ride.

Why this one matters

You can stay the night. Campers sleep at the Garden Key campground beside the fort, and once the day ferry leaves, the beaches, the snorkeling, and the starry skies belong to a handful of people. The ferry provides snorkeling gear for your whole stay, so you can swim the reef whenever you like.
