Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree National Park is in Southern California's Mojave Desert, about two and a half hours from Los Angeles. It is named for its twisted Joshua trees, spiky branching yuccas that grow only in the Mojave Desert, scattered among giant piles of rounded boulders. Two deserts meet here: the higher, cooler Mojave and the lower Colorado Desert, with the Cholla Cactus Garden's dense teddy bear cholla on the southern side. Best season is winter and spring: October through April brings mild hiking weather, and after wet winters March and April bring desert wildflowers.

People come for the Joshua trees themselves. Nowhere else do these twisted, spiky trees grow in such numbers, scattered among stacked boulders across the open desert. At sunrise and sunset the whole landscape turns gold, and the place feels almost unreal.
