Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest sits in eastern Arizona, about three and a half hours from Phoenix, and holds one of the largest concentrations of petrified wood on earth. Fallen trees from 225 million years ago turned to rainbow colored stone, and the logs lie scattered across the desert floor in pieces big and small, beautiful and illegal to take. Ancestral Puebloans built the eight room Agate House entirely from this stone wood, and it still stands today. Spring and fall bring mild days made for walking the Crystal Forest trail, while summer afternoons run hot and exposed.

Why this one matters

Nowhere else on earth has this much rainbow petrified wood lying out in the open. Walk the Crystal Forest trail and the logs are right at your feet, split open to show reds, yellows, and purples like cut gemstones. Then visit Agate House, where Ancestral Puebloans built an eight room home entirely from this stone wood seven centuries ago. It is the rare park where the thing you most want to take home is the one thing you cannot.
