Rocky Mountain National Park

About 90 minutes northwest of Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park is the high Rockies at their most reachable. Trail Ridge Road climbs to 12,183 feet and crosses the Continental Divide through open alpine tundra. In the fall, hundreds of elk gather in Moraine Park and Horseshoe Park, bugling at dawn and dusk. September and early October are the prime weeks, golden aspens and the elk rut before the high road closes.

Why this one matters

The elk rut is one of America's great wildlife spectacles, and it unfolds in open meadows you can watch from the roadside. Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the country, the one place you can stand on the Continental Divide at 12,000 feet without climbing a step.
