Big Bend National Park
Worth making time for
White Sands sits in southern New Mexico, about 90 minutes from El Paso. It holds the world's largest gypsum dune field, 275 square miles of sand so white it looks like snow. Walk in deep where the crowds fall away, and sled down the slopes on a plastic saucer. October through April is the time to go, when the sand is cool enough to walk barefoot.

The dunes run white to the horizon in every direction. Sledding is entirely self serve. Grab a saucer at the visitor center and pick your slope.
